Requirements for the SSI Open Water Course
Fitness
You don’t need to be an athlete or extremely fit to become a scuba diver. You only need a passion for the sport and an open mind to try something new.
Water Skills & Stamina
Basic swimming skills are helpful, as the course includes a 10-minute float or tread water and a 200-meter swim.

Minimum Age
To start your certification, you must be at least 10 years old. Divers aged 10–14 receive a Junior Open Water Diver certification and must dive with an adult until 15. Junior divers aged 10-11 have a maximum depth limit of 12 meters for safety.
Medical Statement
You must be medically fit for diving. You can download the medical statement for scuba diving here. If you have any doubts, please consult your physician or contact us before booking your dive.
What You Will Learn in the SSI Open Water Course
The SSI Open Water course is structured to give you the skills and knowledge to dive safely to a depth of 18 meters (60 feet).
Throughout the course, you’ll cover:
Theory Lessons:
Understanding the basic principles of scuba diving, including physics, physiology, and safety protocols.
Confined Water Training:
Practicing key diving skills in a controlled environment, helping you become comfortable with your equipment and breathing underwater.
Open Water Dives:
Completing four dives at famous Koh Tao dive sites, allows you to gain real-world experience with a certified instructor.

Frequently Asked Questions
I’m not a very strong swimmer. Can I still scuba dive?
To become an SSI Open Water Diver, you need to swim a distance of 200 meters and float for 10 minutes. As long as you can meet these requirements, you can complete the SSI Open Water Course swim portion. We’re not concerned with speed or style—just that you can support yourself in the water!
Can I take a camera on my dives?
We highly discourage you from taking a camera as you and your instructor should both focus only on becoming a well-trained SSI Open Water diver and handling a camera with the new equipment at the same time is not easy. Our In-House Video & Photo company provides perfect pictures or amazing underwater videos for you for a small surcharge.
What are the minimum requirements to begin my SSI Open Water Course?

What happens if I don't complete the course?
If you choose not to finish the entire course, we can issue a certification for partial completion (such as a Scuba Diver certification, which allows dives up to 12 meters with a professional). Alternatively, you can return later to continue from where you left off.
How many students will be in my Open Water Course?
We offer personalized instruction in our SSI Open Water Course, with a maximum of 4 students per instructor. For smaller groups or private courses, please contact us. If you’re traveling with a larger group, we can arrange multiple instructors to accommodate everyone.
Is the certification valid worldwide, and does it expire?
Yes, the SSI Open Water Diver certification is recognized globally and doesn’t expire. However, if you haven’t been diving for a while, it’s a good idea to take a refresher course to revisit your skills.
